Critics in Kentucky Call KEEP Gambling and Casinos Study Biased The Kentucky Equine Education
Project (KEEP) has conducted a study which they say proves that
a majority of Kentucky residents support the expansion of
gambling and casinos in the state. Critics opposed to gambling,
however, call the study’s methods biased, and its results
extremely misleading.
For starters, the fact that a
study on gambling and casinos is financed and designed by a pro-
gambling lobby group is in and of itself suspicious, calling to The report purports to have found that a majority of Kentucky residents believe that racetracks should be permitted to add more gambling features to their repertoires, such as casino- style games and tables. It also alleges to have found that most Kentuckians support the expansion of gambling and casinos in general. However, critics say, an examination of the study methodology reveals that KEEP led respondents to the desired answers, just as a jockey leads a horse wearing blinders. The questions, for example, placed the expansion of gambling and casinos in the context of school funding and other meritorious causes. The reality, say critics, is that it is simply bad policy, and frowned upon by legislators, to earmark funds for specific causes, and has never come to fruition when promised in the past.
